Installation Instructions

Known Issues

  • You may need to refresh the webpage (web GUI) if it does not load or seems to hang.
    • This will happen for MacOS users / Python 2 / Python 3.6 and below using the Chrome web browser (Firefox seems to be OK)
    • This shouldn't happen on Windows builds / Python 3.7 and up as we've applied a fix
Linux: Higurashi with GNOME Desktop/Ubuntu Crashes - CLICK TO EXPAND

GNOME Desktop (the default on Ubuntu) may cause Higurashi Ep.4 and upwards to crash the entire desktop when you start the game.

We've had varying reports - Ubuntu 19.10 with GNOME 3.34.2. seems to work (except for a crash in Tatarigoroshi on first startup). But previously we've had crash reports from anyone using GNOME. This happens even on the base game (without any mods applied).

If you have this issue, a workaround is to install XFCE desktop. You can follow this guide to install XFCE desktop (it can be installed alongside GNOME).

Please make sure you can launch the base game before applying any mods (please don't make any saves on the base game as they are not compatible with the mod).

Explanation of Windows Versions of the Installer

  1. 07th-Mod.Installer.Windows.exe (Requires Administrator) - Try this first.
  2. 07th-Mod.Installer.Windows.SafeMode.exe (Requires Administrator) - If the installer does not start up at all, or you have other problems, try this version of the installer. It uses a text-based interface for the launcher.
  3. 07th-Mod.Installer.Windows.NoLauncher.zip (No Administrator Required): See below instructions

No Launcher instructions

  • Use this version if the above two do not work. It may be useful if:

    • You do not have administrator privileges
    • Your Antivirus software refuses to launch the above two .exes
    • The above two .exes immediately crash, so you're unable to run the installer

  • Usage Instructions

    • You might need to install the Visual C++ Redistributable (x86) (linked from this page), but most people will already have it.
    • Extract the .zip file to your desktop or downloads folder (NOT program files or the game root, as this may cause permissions issues)
    • Double click on the install.bat file.
      • A terminal will open, followed by a special page in your web browser (you use this webpage to install the mod).
      • If the install.bat does not work, close the terminal, then double click the install_safe_mode.bat for the text-only installer

Important Changes

  • Add proper Linux Wine/Proton support to installer 9f0789e 874641e 4bfa159 a5bb193 8e64da8
    • Previously you had to run a special script to install to a Wine/Proton Higurashi game. Now the installer should detect it automatically.
    • Previously the wrong movie files (Windows .mp4) were installed to Wine/Proton Higurashi games, now the correct movie file (Linux .ogv) will be installed automatically.
    • The installer now has a message about Wine/Proton for Higurashi, as well as telling the user if they have the Native Linux game installed or the Wine/Proton game
  • Related to the above, the internal record of what mod files have been installed is now more accurate 7a791cc 3d78ec7
    • Previously the installer would assume that all files (even files which were not installed) were updated to the latest version when an update is performed. Now only files which were actually installed should be updated.
  • Umineko
    • Add existing "Quick Repair" option to Umineko (previously only available for Higurashi) 5c9c8aa
    • Add basic support for Wine/Proton on Umineko 4c06dbc
      • For now, we just patch all executables for Umineko, so a modded copy of Umineko would work on any operating system

Installation Instructions

Known Issues

  • You may need to refresh the webpage (web GUI) if it does not load or seems to hang.
    • This will happen for MacOS users / Python 2 / Python 3.6 and below using the Chrome web browser (Firefox seems to be OK)
    • This shouldn't happen on Windows builds / Python 3.7 and up as we've applied a fix
Linux: Higurashi with GNOME Desktop/Ubuntu Crashes - CLICK TO EXPAND

GNOME Desktop (the default on Ubuntu) may cause Higurashi Ep.4 and upwards to crash the entire desktop when you start the game.

We've had varying reports - Ubuntu 19.10 with GNOME 3.34.2. seems to work (except for a crash in Tatarigoroshi on first startup). But previously we've had crash reports from anyone using GNOME. This happens even on the base game (without any mods applied).

If you have this issue, a workaround is to install XFCE desktop. You can follow this guide to install XFCE desktop (it can be installed alongside GNOME).

Please make sure you can launch the base game before applying any mods (please don't make any saves on the base game as they are not compatible with the mod).

Explanation of Windows Versions of the Installer

  1. 07th-Mod.Installer.Windows.exe (Requires Administrator) - Try this first.
  2. 07th-Mod.Installer.Windows.SafeMode.exe (Requires Administrator) - If the installer does not start up at all, or you have other problems, try this version of the installer. It uses a text-based interface for the launcher.
  3. 07th-Mod.Installer.Windows.NoLauncher.zip (No Administrator Required): See below instructions

No Launcher instructions

  • Use this version if the above two do not work. It may be useful if:

    • You do not have administrator privileges
    • Your Antivirus software refuses to launch the above two .exes
    • The above two .exes immediately crash, so you're unable to run the installer

  • Usage Instructions

    • You might need to install the Visual C++ Redistributable (x86) (linked from this page), but most people will already have it.
    • Extract the .zip file to your desktop or downloads folder (NOT program files or the game root, as this may cause permissions issues)
    • Double click on the install.bat file.
      • A terminal will open, followed by a special page in your web browser (you use this webpage to install the mod).
      • If the install.bat does not work, close the terminal, then double click the install_safe_mode.bat for the text-only installer

Important Changes

Linux Only

  • Add install script for Proton/Wine users in the setup_proton_wine folder (previously needed to provide command line arguments) 780a49c
  • Fix install failing with a "It looks like you have installed the game under Proton or Wine" error, even if you deliberately chose what OS's assets to install ef50783

Virus Scan Results

Your antivirus software or Windows may incorrectly give an antivirus warning (a false positive). If you're worried, you can check the below link for a VirusTotal Scan of the Windows .exe.

Typically we never get more than a couple false positives across the suite of about 67 different types of antivirus software.

  • Rename Linux install scripts to make them easier to run on KDE based file browsers (used by the Steam Deck)
