All operating systems, including Linux and Windows, have the concept of a filesystem to hold files, and directories that group files and other directories. They also have a concept of a "root" or topmost point of the filesystem, where everything is below that point. In Linux, the root is /, and directories are separated by / (e.g., /a/b/c) whereas Windows uses \. Windows also has drive letters, but each drive has a root: C:\, D:\, etc. In the example of /a/b/c, a and b are directories because they have a / after their name. c could be a directory OR a file.
It's the same with /var/www/html.
