Archimedes hardware emulation code (c) David Alan Gilbert 1995-1999
It uses the GPL release of the ARMulator V1.0 by ARM Ltd

This is an emulation of the hardware of an Acorn Archimedes (somewhere around
the A3xx and A4xx series).

All code is (c) David Alan Gilbert 1995-1998 under the GNU Public license
except the code which is part of the original ARMulator which is released
under its original copyright.

It has been tested on:

  Linux/ARM
  Linux/x86

Earlier versions have been tested on:

  Solaris

  IRIX
  HP-UX

All the hardware is documented in something publicly available - although
sometimes you have to do a lot of searching.  Thanks are due to a
number of people at Acorn/ARM etc. for helping me find things which
were not obvious.

    If you are running on a Big Endian machine (e.g. Sun, SG, HP)
    you MUST add 

    -DHOST_BIGENDIAN

    to the CFLAGS line in the top level Makefile - DO NOT change
    the other endian def.

    There appears to be a bug in the floppy code which means
    it won't read 720K disc images....sometimes!

    Arcem 0.50 now supports true colour X displays; your best bet is
    16bpp, or a mode where X runs in 32 bpp (i.e. 24 bpp with 8 bit padding) -
    it hasn't been tested (and may not work) in a true 24 bpp mode - i.e.
    where pixels are 3 bytes apart.  Reports on this are welcome.

    Anybody who mails me about one of these issues without having
    read this will be thrown to the daemons.

NOTES:
  The emulator needs a little endian ROM image to boot from - an ARM/Linux boot
  ROM can be found in the same directory that this emulator is distributed in.
  Other ROMs should work - but it's probably dodgy to try many other appropriate
  ROMS due to copyright. The ROM image should be in the file 'ROM' under the
  main emulator directory.

  CMOS Ram configuration is held in the file hexcmos.  Each line holds
  the value (in hex!) of a location of the CMOS Ram.  Line 'n' contains
  the value for address 'n-1' of the CMOS as measured in the Arcs
  addressing scheme (not the hardware address on the chip). Thanks to
  Richard York's CMOS Ram save code when ever the CMOS is changed a new
  file hexcmos.updated is created. You can copy this into hexcmos if you
  want to. A sample hexcmos file is probvided.

  You will need a .arcemrc in your home directory, a file containing the
  following will do, it defines two hard drives of about 20MB (drive,
  cylinders,heads,sectors, sector size (fixed!)):
  
     MFM disc
     1 612 4 32 256
     MFM disc
     2 612 4 32 256

  dot.arcemrc in the distribution contains that.

  The main window uses its own colourmap to be able to cope with 256
  colour modes - I'd like to incorporate the control panel above the
  main pane - but I can't figure out how to make one subpane within one
  toplevel pane have a different colourmap. If anyone knows tell me!

  Everything is done via XLib directly.

  The keyboard works but is slow - 
  The key map is very simple. It uses the unshifted version of each key
  to map to the Arcs key map.  For example the '2' key when shifted is
  always '@' as on an Arc - whatever it is on your keyboard. This
  weird arrangment is essential otherwise you can get very strange things
  happening if you release a key before releasing the key. So you can
  type about 64 characters blind and it will slowly filter in.  Page-up,
  page-down only work if you compile with X11R6 libraries (or at least
  something which defines the necessary keysyms).  Scroll lock/print
  screen don't seem to work on my Linux box - mind you it doesn't seem
  to be generating keysym's for them.  You should press any lock key
  twice  (X only gives me one event for each since it locks).  The +
  on the numberic keypad is used to enable mouse tracking so isn't
  available for normal use and X doesn't define a keysym for a # sign on
  the keypad; so I use KP_F1 (this isn't tested!).

  Timing is a bit weird at the mo.  The IOC timers get incremented at
  about CPU cycles/2 - all cycles take the same time (sequential/non
  /ROM etc.) Frame interrupts occur whenver I refresh.

  It's amazing what runs on this emulator.

  There is a MEMC problem - I don't think it correctly emulates
  the MEMC when programmed with the wrong page size - so in particular a
  1MB machine with a MEMC programmed to 32K goes screwy - unfortunatly I
  think this happens when OSes try to figure out how much RAM they have.
  everything works fine for 4MB - 1MB dies - somehow 2MB seems to work!
  Although I'm not sure, I think what should happen is that if you have
  1MB and your programmed in 32K page mode, then physical RAM should
  still be 4MB long - but with 8K in and then gaps of 24K.

  It uses the public release of the ARM emulator
  It's been hacked about heavily; the facilities for connecting to debuggers
  have gone, as has 32 bit mode support, its full event scheduling mechanism,
  most of the RDI code, and bits of the Archemedes emulation have crept
  into the ARM emulator core for speed.  There are also some bug
  fixes to the emulator core.

  Screen refresh is done with a little intelligence.  A flag is kept on
  each 256 bytes of the first 512K of physical RAM and lines aren't
  refreshed unless that RAM has changed. (I suspect the code to mark RAM
  as refreshed is a little over optimistic - but it hasn't hit
  problems...yet).

  I've profiled it and I've put some tricks in so that it now spends
  most of its time in ARM emulation. One of these is a single entry TLAB
  into the MEMC emulation; that helps a LOT (emulationg CAM in software
  is a little slow!).   I've tried other approaches but this seems to be
  the fastest so far.

Floppy
------
  Floppy drive: in the directory from which the binary is run should be
  a file (or symlink) called 'FloppyImage0'. 'arcem' can support either
  Acorn E-Format discs or DOS 720K images (Which are more useful for Linux).
  'arcem' is normally distributed configured for DOS format; this can
  be changed by commenting out the 

  #define DOSDISC

  line in arch/fdc1772.c and RECOMPILE.

  The best way to get E-format images is using !Zap on an Arc;
  you can get DOS disc images using 'dd if=/dev/fd0 of=imagefile' from Linux.

  If you are transferring the file over NFS from an Arc  remember to set
  the type of the file to 'data' (or anything other than the
  load/execute type) before transferring it.  (If you forget, Acorn's PC-NFS
  will be 'clever' and tack some extra bytes on for you). Similarly you
  can have FloppyImage1,2, and 3. If these files don't open then
  attempting to access one of the floppy drives will go very badly
  wrong.

  At the moment there is a quick hack set up so that if you send the
  emulator a SIGUSR2 it will reopen the FloppyImage0 file - that allows
  you to swap floppies while the emulator is running.

Hard drives
-----------
  Hard drives: The Image file 'HardImage1' (and probably HardImage2 ...)
  represent the ST506 hard drives connected to the A4x0's HD63463
  controller. The file is ordered in cylinder,head,sector format - i.e.
  sector 1 of any given track is after sector 0.  The sectors for head 1
  of a track are after those for head 0.  Cylinder n head 0 is after
  cylinder n-1 head (max head)'s data.  At the moment large drives (more
  than 8?) heads are not catered for.  The hard drive is an extremly
  speedy drive with almost 0 step time and an incredibly fast rotational
  speed.  There are however some delays between commands starting and in
  between sectors being transferred.

  Using the mouse: To move the mouse cursor, you must switch into 'mouse
  following mode'.  To do this move the X mouse pointer close to the arc
  pointer.  Then press '+' on the numeric keypad - this toggles the
  mouse following mode.  Move the mouse slowly (it won't actually try
  and follow until the mouse is moved).  The X cursor will then be
  locked into the centre of the window; as you move your OS should shift the
  mouse cursor in response to the mouse requests.

  The mouse buttons are just the X mouse's buttons (in the same order).

If you happen to notice anything which is obviously wrong etc. - please
