First, thanks for sharing gpastel! It's really handy!
However I can never seem to get it going (no matter how many times I call gpastel-mode) until I call the function gpastel-get-copied-text at least once. Then it starts working...

I don't know about your problem and I'm not using gpastel anymore because of a bug in GPaste. I'm using clipmenu which works better and is much simpler.
Regarding your problem, it might be that gpaste is only started on demand by systemd. In this case, it might be possible that you have to force initialization of gpaste before starting gpastel.
