Hi @RChapman1407 and welcome to the ESMValTool discussion! I am sorry we took a while to come by your question, we are not as expedite with Discussion items compared to Issues. Regarding your question: there is a shapefile that includes only the Atlantic, and you can use that one with the extract_shape preprocessor - note, this is |

There are various tools for creating shapefiles. Did you try searching the internet? Here is a tutorial for creating shapefiles with QGIS: https://docs.qgis.org/3.22/en/docs/training_manual/create_vector_data/create_new_vector.html, which is free software and here is an explanation on how to do it with Google Earth and ArcGIS (not free): https://gis.stackexchange.com/questions/313662/how-can-i-generate-shapefile-from-google-earth. |

Hi,
I am trying using esmvaltool though JASMIN to average some ocean salinity data over a defined region in the North Atlantic. I am using an edited version of recipe_ocean_example.yml
I am currently able to use extract_region to define long. and lat. bounds of my region, and extract_volume to specify the depth levels to be considered. My problem is that the region I am trying to extract is not a standard definition of the North Atlantic, and currently defining lat and long is not accurate enough to exclude the Med sea (this is causing my average salinity for the box to be very high). I cannot just change my bounds as I need to include the North sea.
I have explored using shapefiles, but found the documentation on writing a new shapefile from scratch to be very limited and so far has not been possible.
I essentialy need to be able to define a more accurate 3d volume which is not a cube in shape. This could be through a shapefile, or perhaps there is a way of using a preprocessor to mask the small region I do not want included? Any help will be much appreciated.
Thanks
