bibtex errror: I couldn't open file name 'main.aux'

What I did (steps to reproduce)

Installed MikTeX, Pycharm, and TeXiFy IDEA on Pycharm.

Minimal example to reproduce the problem

The command and error:

bibtex -include-directory=C:/Users/name/PycharmProjects/projectname/src -include-directory=C:/Users/name/PycharmProjects/projectname/src main
I couldn't open file name `main.aux'

I got the same error on the default "out/" directory so tried switching everything to the same folder. Same problem.

Expected behavior

If I run from the command line, then BibTeX works correctly:

...\src> pdflatex main.tex
--> Looking good
...\src> bibtex main
This is BibTeX, Version 0.99d (MiKTeK 21.3)
The top-level auxiliary file: main.aux
The style file: plain.bst
Database file #1: main.bib

So this works...

Can anyone explain what might be going on? Sorry, a bit of a newbie here.

What is the working directory that is shown in the bibtex run configuration?
It is probably not what you expect, so you can change it manually to fix it.

I would appreciate it if you could delete the run configurations and re-generated them, then check whether it works, because the automatically generated run configurations should always work.

You're right, thank you! The working directory for BibTeX is set to:

C:/Users/name/AppData/Local/JetBrains/Toolbox/apps/PyCharm-C/ch-0/203.7717.81/jbr/bin

I don't know how that happened. After removing both run configurations (LaTeX and BibTeX) and running main again, it works. The working directory for the BibTeX configuration is now blank, which I assume is default. Not sure how that happened, but if anyone has a similar problem that's how to solve it!

I can close this now, but I am curious how do you think the weird directory got set?

Oh no, not again. I've already solved that bug where it's setting any paths to the /bin folder countless times but it keeps coming back. I can have a look again but since it's so difficult to reproduce it's also difficult to know when I really solved it.

Hm, it shouldn't be blank I think, it should be the directory where main.aux is by default (generally the output directory of the LaTeX run config). But it could be that I implemented a fallback for if the path is empty, so you can make use of that of course, as long as it works it's good I'd say.
