Throughout my life I have had many spiritual &&
emotional mountain top moments. Times where I would overcome adversity, uncertainty, ||
uncover a surprising truth. Learning to code while simultaneously working as a full-time dad was certainly filled with many moments deep in the "valley" juxtaposed with just as many "mountain-top" experiences. The memory of those “summit” experiences are what carried me through the challenges of learning new programming languages, getting roasted on StackOverflow, or dealing with a toddler temper tantrum in the middle of Target.
In 2018 my partner, son, and I were living in North County San Diego and from our backyard we could see a long dormant volcano. That peak captivated my imagination the moment when we moved in. When I started my journey learning to code, in 2019, I would often sit outside &&
work on my laptop while our two year old son would play in his sandbox. I would often stare up at the volcano &&
imagine myself climbing it &&
standing on the summit - &&
just like that I came up with the name for my portfolio site...mountainTopCoding(🏔);
As an avid outdoors-man I know that successfully summiting a peak requires courage, tenacity, stamina, preparation, &&
team work. Furthermore, the descent can often be considerably more dangerous than the ascent. mountainTopCoding(🏔); is not just about the summit. It is also about the journey to the top, getting down safely, &&
navigating through the valleys of life all so that the next summit can be enjoyed.
As human beings we should use the "mountain-top" experiences in our life to strengthen us while we are in the deep &&
dark valleys, where the sky may be just a sliver of the expanse we crave. Living life for the sole purpose of pursuing only "mountain top" experiences can be dangerous though. One of my favorite authors once wrote: "When we are in an unhealthy condition either physically ||
emotionally, we always look for thrills in life.[..] In our emotional life it leads to obsessions &&
to the destruction of our morality; &&
in our spiritual life, if we insist on pursuing only thrills, it will result in the destruction of our spirituality.". With those words keeping me grounded I have stuck with my journey as a coder through thick and thin. There have been some hard days &&
even some long discouraging months - but I have stuck with it.
