434. Number of Segments in a String

Problem Description

Count the number of segments in a string, where a segment is defined to be a contiguous sequence of non-space characters.

Please note that the string does not contain any non-printable characters.

Example 1:

Input: "Hello, my name is John"
Output: 5

Solution

Approach 1:

public int countSegments(String s) {
    s = s.trim();
    if (s.length() == 0) return 0;
    return s.split(" +").length;
}

Approach 2:

class Solution {
    public int countSegments(String s) {
        int i = 0, count = 0;
        while (i < s.length()) {
            while (i < s.length() && s.charAt(i) == ' ')
                i++;
            if (i == s.length()) break;
            while (i < s.length() && s.charAt(i) != ' ')
                i++;
            count++;
        }
        return count;
    }
}
