BBC Nitro Terms of Use

BBC Nitro is the BBC’s application programming interface (API) for BBC Programmes Metadata.

“BBC Programmes Metadata” is the information about the BBC’s content, programmes and schedules, such as what you can see in programme listings and in the programme directories on bbc.co.uk/programmes. BBC Programmes Metadata can include the programme’s title, availability (both online and on-demand) and narrative description.

These terms of use explain how you may use BBC Nitro and BBC Programmes Metadata. Please read these terms and the BBC Online Terms of Use carefully before you use the BBC Nitro service.

By accessing or using BBC Nitro and/or BBC Programmes Metadata, you agree to these terms of use and the BBC Online Terms of Use. If there is a conflict, these BBC Nitro Terms of Use override the BBC Online Terms of Use.

Sometimes, additional terms will apply to specific BBC Programmes Metadata content and these terms will be made clear to you at the point of access. By accessing and using that BBC Programmes Metadata you agree to those additional terms.

Some BBC Programmes Metadata is not owned by the BBC. The BBC accepts no responsibility or liability for your use of such BBC Programmes Metadata.

How can I access BBC Nitro?

To access BBC Nitro, you will first need to register and create an app at developer.bbc.co.uk. The BBC will then provide you with an electronic access key that will make certain features of BBC Nitro available to you through feeds, depending on the access level given to you.

These features range from access to programme times and titles, past/future schedules and programme images.

Your access to BBC Nitro will, however, be subject to rate limits set by the BBC from time to time regarding the frequency and the number of times you can access BBC Nitro. How can I use BBC Nitro?

You may:

  • copy and use BBC Programme Metadata on your website, in your application, blog, on a social media network or use BBC Programme Metadata for academic research purposes; and
  • customise BBC Programme Metadata by selecting, deleting and rearranging identifiable sections of it for those uses.

What are the restrictions on how I can use BBC Nitro?

In accessing BBC Nitro and BBC Programme Metadata, you must not:

  • disrupt or try to disrupt BBC Nitro;
  • exceed the limits set by your access level to BBC Nitro and/or try to circumvent or subvert the rate limits imposed by the BBC from time to time;
  • infringe any applicable law (for instance copyright law) when using BBC Nitro;
  • sub-license or redistribute the BBC Programme Metadata to another party;
  • use BBC Programme Metadata for commercial purposes, including but not limited to, selling access to BBC Programme Metadata.
  • use any of our trade marks or logos.

No reliance on BBC Programme Metadata

The BBC does not guarantee that all BBC Programme Metadata will be available on BBC Nitro, or that BBC Nitro and BBC Programme Metadata will always be available or be uninterrupted, timely, secure and free from errors or omissions.

The BBC is not responsible or liable for anything that happens to you:

  • if you rely on any advice, commentary, opinions or other materials included in the BBC Programme Metadata; or any loss of data or damage to your device or software caused by your use of BBC Programme Metadata.

The BBC may:

  • stop making BBC Nitro or any part of the BBC Programme Metadata available to you without any notice to you; and modify, suspend or discontinue your access to BBC Nitro with immediate effect and without notice.

If the BBC does discontinue your access to BBC Nitro, you must stop using and delete all BBC Programme Metadata downloaded by you.

Do I have to pay to use BBC Nitro?

You can access BBC Nitro for free. The BBC does make additional features of BBC Nitro available for commercial purposes, and if you would like access to these additional features please contact nitro@bbc.co.uk.
