No joy in setting VID and PID with AdaFruit Itsy Bitsy board

I am trying to migrate a sketch done for a Leonardo to an AdaFruit Itsy Bitsy board (32u4 based). Windows 11, IDE2.8.3

For setting the VID and PID in the leonardo sketch, it was simply a matter of editing the Boards.txt file within the \AppData\Local\Arduino15\packages\arduino\hardware\avr\1.8.6 directory.

After installing board support for the AdaFruit, I found a similar boards.txt at AppData\Local\Arduino15\packages\adafruit\hardware\avr\1.4.15

But modifying the entries:

itsybitsy32u4_5V.build.vid=0x239A
itsybitsy32u4_5V.build.pid=0x800E

Does not seem to have any effect.

I also notice that there are entries for the same board that look like this:

itsybitsy32u4_5V.vid.0=0x239A
itsybitsy32u4_5V.pid.0=0x000E

Which confuses me as to their purpose. Changing those values also seems to have no effect after uploading to the board.

Any help or ideas are much appreciated!
