# Learn: What is the OHI? {#learn}

There is a lot to learn about the Ocean Health Index framework to best prepare you for leading your own OHI+ assessment. We recommend watching and reading the following, which starts with a broad overview and then goes deeper into different aspects of OHI and how to think about planning your own OHI+ assessment. As you progress, continue to come back to review these materials throughout your assessment.

This webinar by OHI founding scientists Dr. Ben Halpern and Dr. Steve Katona introduces the OHI through describing details of the fifth annual global assessment. They discuss changes in OHI scores over five years, possible causes and consequences of those changes, challenges and opportunities for composite indicators to incorporate the best available science each year, and lessons learned in repeating and improving the OHI assessment each year.

This webinar by OHI+ leads Dr. Julia Lowndes and Eric Pacheco provides an overview of what is involved with leading an OHI assessment and what to think about as you begin. The OHI's standardized structure is repeatable and familiar across assessment jurisdictions but it is flexible to represent the important social and ecological characteristics, values, and priorities of the area assessed. Independent groups are able to lead assessments within their own waters, deciding what is important to measure and which data to include while building directly from the experiences and methods from other OHI assessments.

This publication describes best practices for conducting assessments: 

- Incorporate key characteristics and priorities into the assessment framework design before gathering information
- Strategically define spatial boundaries to balance information availability and decision-making scales
- Maintain the key characteristics and priorities of the assessment framework regardless of information limitations
- Document and share the assessment process, methods, and tools.
