Importing Models from Other Editors and Formats to Visual Paradigm

In this page you are going to receive information about migrating models from other modeling editors to Visual Paradigm. This page provides the following information:

Visual Paradigm built-in importing options

Visual Paradigm Version 16.3 already provide built-in importations from the following tools and formats:

  • Bizagi
  • Default Diagram Element Format
  • Enterprise Architect
  • Erwin Project (XML)
  • Excel
  • MXMI
  • NetBeans UML Project
  • PowerDesigner DataArchitect
  • Rational DNX
  • Rational Model
  • Rational Rhapsody Project
  • Rational System Architect
  • Rose Project
  • Text Based Sequence Diagram
  • Visio
  • Visual Paradigm Project
  • Visual UML
  • XML

However, just the following options are available for the Visual Paradigm Community version:

  • Default Diagram Element Format
  • Erwin Project (XML)
  • XML

The other importing can be done through the Visual Paradigm Modeler version, which can be freely evaluated. To import using one of the restricted options, please start the evaluation period first.

Importing from other editors to Visual Paradigm

From Astah to Visual Paradigm

  1. Start your Astah installation
  2. Open your project
  3. Go to: Tools > XML Input & Output > Save as XML project

This will generate an XML Metadata Interchange (XMI) file

  1. Start your Visual Paradigm installation
  2. Go to: Project > Import > XMI

  • Notice that you will need at least the "modeler edition" of Visual Paradigm for this
  • To generate your file you can use the "modeler edition" with the evaluation license
  1. Go to: Project > Save > Save as

  • Now you have your .vpp file that you can open with your Visual Paradigm Community Edition
