We're thrilled and grateful to announce our 2024 offering of Pathways to Open Science! This is an ongoing collaboration with [Black in Marine Science (BIMS)](https://www.blackinmarinescience.org/), [Black Women in Ecology, Evolution, and Marine Science (BWEEMS)](https://www.bweems.org/), and HBCU marine science professors led by Ileana Fenwick, with Alex Davis, PhD, and Aneese Williams. Thanks to new funding from the [Mozilla Foundation's Alumni Connection grants](https://foundation.mozilla.org/en/blog/mozilla-announces-first-ever-alumni-connection-grant-finalists/), the Openscapes team is excited to collaborate with [PREreview](https://prereview.org/) and Antoinette Foster, PhD to bring expertise in values-guided career navigation and anti-racist scholarly review to the programming this year. Pathways to Open Science is a free remote event series for Black environmental & marine researchers to build community for the future of data intensive science.
The series kicks off January 25th with six events weekly on Thursdays alternating between Community Calls to learn from speakers and Coworking for folks to bring their own work, code, or questions and learn new skills together (details on the [website](https://openscapes.github.io/pathways-to-open-science/#program-details)). Presenters include LaTreese Denson, PhD (NOAA Fisheries), Dawn Wright, PhD (ESRI), Justin Rice, PhD (NASA Earth Science), SherAaron Hurt (The Carpentries), Jason Williams, PhD (Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory), Antoinette Foster, PhD (OHSU), and Bárbara Pinheiro and Aliyah Griffith who participated in our 2023 series.
If you are a Black marine scientist and/or an HBCU student, we would love to have you! Please [register](https://zoom.us/meeting/register/tJ0ldempqDIrHtQ4KqAbr442Tm0xl4-h_dtC) and come to as many of the six events as you are able to and invite others to join you! If you are an ally, please help us amplify Black voices; we suggest allies do not sign up for this particular series.

We are so thrilled that the Openscapes community is included in the White House Fact Sheet as the [Biden-Harris Administration Marks the Anniversary of OSTP’s Year of Open Science](https://www.whitehouse.gov/ostp/news-updates/2024/01/31/fact-sheet-biden-harris-administration-marks-the-anniversary-of-ostps-year-of-open-science/)!
This is a huge deal — and not only because now you can google "White House Openscapes"! This Fact Sheet celebrates The Year of Open Science and a lot of hard work by many people within and across agencies and communities. Congratulations to the many many people involved in this movement. We are proud and honored to be recognized as part of this work.
While Openscapes supports many groups including US Federal agencies like NASA Earthdata, NOAA Fisheries, and the EPA, the Fact Sheet names us specifically as part of our efforts with [NOAA Fisheries Open Science](https://www.fisheries.noaa.gov/science-data/open-science-noaa-fisheries). We are so grateful to the NOAA Fisheries team members, some of whom are shown and listed below!

We are so happy to share that a paper co-authored by Openscapes mentors across organizations – including NASA Earthdata, NOAA Fisheries, EPA, California Water Boards, Pathways to Open Science, Fred Hutch Cancer Center – was just published: [Shifting institutional culture to develop climate solutions with Open Science](https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/ece3.11341). From co-author Anna Holder, Cal EPA / Water Boards: "It’s a short read and quite uplifting and inspirational and provides some more insight and what we’re learning as we implement Openscapes across organizations.”
::: blockquote-blue | ||
> "*Our best advice to start shifting culture is to have regularly scheduled learning meetings—with structure and intention to make them different from other work meetings.*"
::: | ||
Please let us know what you think, and share with colleagues!
We deeply appreciate the contributions made by all Openscapes Mentors and community members who are not listed here.
