Refactor: Are function closures necessary for the new recommendations query?

Are function closures necessary for the new recommendations query? See if we can get rid of them/simplify the code there a bit. It might also be a good idea to move some of the logic of the query out into regular functions (including the closure ones, which we could turn into regular functions).
