Our Cooperative

The School for Poetic Computation is cooperatively stewarded(1) by artists, teachers, and creative practitioners who are engaged and self-motivated in communities of practice spanning art, computation, poetry, critical theory, publishing and community organizing.

Our cooperative is rooted in shared values informed by a communist(2) politic which emphasizes: trust, friendship, healthy conflict & boundaries, and support. The legacy of SFPC depends on us explicitly stating our values so they can exist beyond the current members and be passed onto future generations.

Our cooperative exists within a broader community and is accountable to that community.

Our cooperative consists of members who hold many identities: artist, teacher, student, learner, participant, community member, and so on.

Our cooperative structure is formed through coalition and federation, beginning with the way we organize ourselves individually and extending into the ways we organize collectively with other people and beings. Cooperative members and participants are encouraged to be active members of their community, including outreach and volunteering within grassroots organizations.

Our cooperative collectively empowers individuals to act as temporary leaders or stewards who embody the values of the organization enough to be trusted with taking responsibility for seeing the vision of the cooperative through.

Our cooperative leadership structure must be: explicit, democratic, and accountable.

Our cooperative must define clear and shifting roles in order to prevent the harmful effects of hierarchy.

Our cooperative acknowledges the material conditions of the lives of its teachers, participants, and workers or more specifically, how social codes surrounding race, sex, gender, class, and disability affect our ability to work cooperatively. Participants, teachers, and community members are the most important part of any cooperative educational organization.
(3)

Our cooperative strives to be healthy. A healthy cooperative is only as healthy as its most vulnerable member. When we’re equally invested in everyone’s success, only then does everyone benefit. The work only supports itself if it supports its workers. A healthy cooperative is a people-first organization.

Our cooperative protects its workers against economic precarity. Contracts must be issued and signed before workers begin work. Contracts must clearly lay out the roles and responsibilities for each worker. No unpaid positions or internships, even for school credit.

Our cooperative members always have a vote when electing new members into the cooperative.

Our cooperative is not driven by profits. Money is a currency for stability and security. Ideas are a currency for bringing new worlds into being. We must budget for these different currencies in our accounting. Money is a logistical limit, but not an ideological limit.

Our cooperative is a platform for knowledge and wealth redistribution. No one should be denied an educational opportunity because of their inability to pay. Wealth should be actively redistributed via scholarships and funds should be invested in under-represented, oppressed and minoritized communities.

Our cooperative practices financial transparency. The budget, income from tuition, income from donors, and salaries of workers should be public.
