FineBuild can install Windows Installer 4.5 as part of the SQL Server install process.
SQL Server 2008 and above requires that Windows Installer 4.5 is installed prior to starting the main SQL Server install.
For some editions of SQL Server or versions of Windows the install media for Windows Installer 4.5 must be downloaded, for others the install media is included. The table below shows when you must do a download.

This covers Windows 2008 R2, Windows 2012 and Windows 2012 R2, Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 8.1.
If you are installing on Windows 2008 R2 or above, Windows Installer 4.5 or above is built in to this version of Windows. No download or install is needed.
This covers Windows XP, Windows 2003, Windows Vista and Windows 2008

Obtain a copy of any SQL Server 2008 server edition media. This can be the free Evaluation Edition media.

For both 32-bit and 64-bit installations, copy the following folder:

The Additional Components\Redist\Windows Installer folder must contain both the \x86 and \x64 sub-folders, but the \ia64 sub-folder can be deleted.
- If you are installing SQL Server Express Edition, then you must also Install .Net 3.5.
Automated silent installation of Windows Installer 4.5 is performed by Process Id 2AH. It will always be performed if the version of Windows Installer already installed is lower than 4.5.
If Windows Installer 4.5 is installed, then a reboot will be done to allow this component to be used.
The following steps show what you would have to do to install Windows Installer 4.5 manually. FineBuild does all of this work for you automatically.

Navigate to the install media
Double-click on the following file:
