The chalice will be rewrote to suit the original purpose of the item + additional features. These include...

  • Infinite fluid container (Empty when crafted or when drunk from event)
  • Can fill tanks (Inc Botania's petal apothecary)
  • When you drink from it exchanges health for hunger (2 hearts (4 hit points) = 1 and a half food (2 food points - NO SATURATION)
  • Can be used from a dispenser on tanks and directly on the world to place a source block

Just want to confirm regarding drinking behaviour:

Current drinking behaviour is to restore 1 hunger and (multiplier/2) saturation then drown the user for multiplier damage where multiplier is configurable in the options.

  1. Do you still want it configurable?
  2. Do you want it to still be a multiplier? Or should we just allow the modpack author to configure a fixed number of damage, hunger and saturation (with defaults of 4, 3 and 0).

"Infinite fluid container" could be interpreted in a few ways:

  1. Like a portable tank. Can contain any fluid. Can contain an infinite amount. Player needs to fill it. Drinking consumes 1 bucket.
  2. Like a creative portable tank. Can contain any fluid. Fill it with one bucket of any fluid and it will have an infinite amount. Would be OP.
  3. Like the current chalice (but different). Supports water only. Must be filled with 1 block (bucket) of water before it can be used. When active, places water source blocks. When not active, replaces water source blocks with air and "fills" the item if not already "filled".

If we were going to go for 1 or 2 I think we'd be better off making a separate item for it and leaving the chalice alone.

I have some serious reservations about the re-tuning of the drinking mechanic.

  • Allowing only one drink before refilling actually makes the item less risky by preventing the player from drowning to death under most circumstances.

  • Hunger level tuning - This is the result of drinking at full health and 18 hunger with the proposed tuning:

Before drinking: health: "20.0", hunger: "18", saturation: "0.0"
After drinking: health: "16.0", hunger: "20", saturation: "0.0"
Before drinking: health: "20.0", hunger: "17", saturation: "0.0"
After drinking: health: "16.0", hunger: "19", saturation: "0.0"
Before drinking: health: "16.0", hunger: "19", saturation: "0.0"
After drinking: health: "12.0", hunger: "20", saturation: "0.0"
Before drinking: health: "16.0", hunger: "17", saturation: "0.0"
After drinking: health: "12.0", hunger: "19", saturation: "0.0"

  • If we're going to nerf drinking so hard, why not just remove the drinking mechanic altogether? With zero saturation the only real use for drinking is to avoid starving for another minute or so. Any player who has the resources to create it almost certainly has the resources to make as much golden food as their heart desires though.

As far as filling the chalice goes, what exactly does it add to gameplay? It just seems like another pointless chore. It doesn't challenge the player, it is just an annoyance. It only makes sense if we're going for option 1 or 2. If you look at the original recipe, it's pre-filled with Ghast Tears on crafting. That's how it gets its infinite properties. If the point was the prevent the "infinite food source" trick, well removing saturation already did that.

  1. Yes
  2. Allow the modpack author to configure it how they like

Infinite fluid container = 3 I like this idea. And personally what you feel fits best is good by my standard

Right now what I feel fits best is to leave it as is! Right now it's useful as a way of not having to carry around 2 buckets for an infinite water source. Water is plentiful enough that requiring it to be "filled" is a pointless change. Drinking can be tuned in the config.

As far as an infinite water container, we could make that as a separate item. Golden Eyedropper. But we'd have to figure out how to balance it. In other mods large tanks are expensive. Having an infinitely sized portable fluid mover will break the balance completely with those mods. I'm not sure it'd be possible to make it expensive enough using just a crafting table (unless we made something silly like "compressed diamonds" :P )
