One of the best films. Made by one of the best film directors, Akira Kurosawa.
I like the actor Toshirô Mifune, too.
Some merits: It does tell a story. It feels plausible that something like this happened. It takes one back centuries. I feel drawn into the story from the first seconds of the film, before I can see its first frames, and I'm glued to the screen until the credits roll.
