Text and Digital Editing (Lexicography and Geography) (June 1)

The session will offer some examples of advanced applications of TEI and EpiDoc XML, focusing on specific texts belonging to technical genres and having a very peculiar lexicon and structure. While TEI provides specific modules aimed at encoding sources with a very strong technical character, it appears problematic for tagging semantically relevant information and linguistic structures with a strong degree of variation. Therefore, the first part of the lesson will show situations that can be solved within an established XML Schema like TEI, and the second part will highlight still existing problems, showing instances of texts that emphasize the limits of the system and require different strategies. The students will become aware of the peculiarities and the problems connected with the editorial practice of lexica and geographical texts, and will have a substantial introduction to specific TEI modules. In conclusion, they will be able to assess the practical advantages of advanced and problem-focused digital editing.

- Markup strategies for digital editions of geographical texts: encoding distances and numerical data; encoding relatedness between spatial entities

On the basis of the required modules from the TEI Guidelines, evaluate markup strategies for Dictionaries or Geographical sources with the proposed texts, or pick one text of your choice.
- Read the text thoroughly and individuate features specific to the literary genre
- Write a first paragraph, addressing your expectations and your strategy for marking up specific features in a significant way
- Mark up your text
- Write a second paragraph about the difficulties, the problems in addressing certain textual specificities and (if you want) a strategy for representing them in a better way.
