It would be advisable to use a branch model that isn't dependant on using main as the stream of release publishing.

In the order stated below, this is how the branching could function for workflows.

  • v{major}.{minor}.{patch}[-(alpha,prerelease,etc.)] - Physical release tag.
  • staging - Handled by package maintainers, used for preparing releases.
  • main - Used as development branch that all contributors branch from.
