<span itemprop="articleBody">
<p>I noticed recently that both Django and Django REST framework have a <code>reverse</code> method:</p>
<ul>
<li><a href="https://docs.djangoproject.com/en/3.2/ref/urlresolvers/#reverse">Django reverse</a></li>
<li><a href="https://www.django-rest-framework.org/api-guide/reverse/#reverse">DRF reverse</a></li>
</ul>
<p>And I started wondering which one to use...</p>
<p>There are 2 differences:</p>
<ul>
<li>absolute or relative URI</li>
<li>use or not the request version to resolve to the proper version of the URI</li>
</ul>
<h2>Relative or absolute</h2>
<p>Django <code>reverse</code> returns a relative URI when DRF <code>reverse</code> can return an absolute URI.</p>
<div class="highlight"><pre><span></span><code><span class="kn">from</span> <span class="nn">django.urls</span> <span class="kn">import</span> <span class="n">reverse</span>
<span class="n">reverse</span><span class="p">(</span><span class="s2">"admin:login"</span><span class="p">)</span>
</code></pre></div>
<p>Returns <code>/admin/login/</code></p>
<div class="highlight"><pre><span></span><code><span class="kn">from</span> <span class="nn">rest_framework.reverse</span> <span class="kn">import</span> <span class="n">reverse</span>
<span class="n">reverse</span><span class="p">(</span><span class="s2">"admin:login"</span><span class="p">,</span> <span class="n">request</span><span class="o">=</span><span class="n">request</span><span class="p">)</span>
</code></pre></div>
<p>Returns <code>http://127.0.0.1:8000/admin/login/</code>, assuming you are running your project locally with <code>./manage.py runserver</code>.
The <code>request</code> parameter is optional, if you don't pass it you will get a relative URI.</p>
<h2>URLs for versioned APIs</h2>
<p>As explained in <a href="https://www.django-rest-framework.org/api-guide/versioning/#reversing-urls-for-versioned-apis">DRF documentation</a> when the versionning is used DRF's <code>reverse</code> can apply any URL transformations appropriate to the request version. For example:</p>
<div class="highlight"><pre><span></span><code><span class="kn">from</span> <span class="nn">rest_framework.reverse</span> <span class="kn">import</span> <span class="n">reverse</span>
<span class="n">reverse</span><span class="p">(</span><span class="s2">"bookings-list"</span><span class="p">,</span> <span class="n">request</span><span class="o">=</span><span class="n">request</span><span class="p">)</span>
</code></pre></div>
<p>Would look up for the <code>v1:bookings-list</code> if <code>NamespaceVersioning</code> was being used, and the API version was <code>v1</code>. That would resolve to something like <code>http://127.0.0.1:8000/v1/bookings/</code>.</p>
<h2>reverse_lazy</h2>
<p>The same differences exist between Django and DRF <code>reverse_lazy</code> methods.</p>
<ul>
<li><a href="https://docs.djangoproject.com/en/3.2/ref/urlresolvers/#reverse-lazy">Django reverse_lazy</a></li>
<li><a href="https://www.django-rest-framework.org/api-guide/reverse/#reverse_lazy">DRF reverse_lazy</a></li>
</ul>
