One explanation for the invocation of the save function is because I'd coded example: {}. This causes the block to display a preview using default attributes.
I removed that code but it's still calling save().
And it continues to produce the block validation failed message.
The differences betwen the generated by save and the retrieved from post body HTML
are that the links to the blocks are different

Perhaps the block list should default to not creating links.
