Old issue but this is fixed in https://github.com/protobi/msexcel-builder.
It's currently limited in that it allows you to specify a PNG as a dataURI in base64 format, and it fills the specified cell range (stretching the image if necessary). We played with extending to SVG, but that's not yet complete. But you can add an image and it preserves the best aspects of this library in that it's tiny and runs in the browser.
