Dumb question, why is my when condition not working?

Just a basic question, for some reason the when condition doesn't work for me tried several ways

add_stuff:
    type: bool
    help: Add stuff?
    default: false
stuff_name:
    type: str
    default: temporary
    when: "[[ add_stuff ]]"

also tried:
when: "[* if add_stuff== true *]"
when: "[[ if add_stuff== true ]]"
when: "[[ if add_stuff== True ]]"
when: add_stuff

What Copier version are you using? Do you have other configuration options in your .copier.yml? Did you try with {{ add_stuff }} instead of [[ add_stuff ]]?

I'm using 5.1.0, don't have any other configurations for variable_start_string (just the copier.yml) and I'm using [[]] in other places which are working fine, for example if I add

stuff_name_upper:
    type: str
    default: "[[ stuff_name|upper ]]"

that sets the default correctly to TEMPORARY
and {{ add_stuff }} didn't work either

5.1 doesn't have conditional questions implemented, afaik. This is >= 6. See the stable docs for reference.

Thank you @wsascha that was it, and just one more thing on the newest version does "_extra_context: " no longer work? I couldn't find it in the docs
