Reflections
From early in the project’s development we realized as a team that the first prototype deadline was a particularly large amount of work to complete in the (official) one-week timeframe delegated to the milestone. Because of this we made a team effort to spend as much time as possible early on learning Unity in preparation for the first week of development. Furthermore, as a group we aimed to start development before the deadline for design docs in an attempt to give ourselves more than a week to complete the prototype. Despite this goal we began development exactly one week out from the submission which, we felt as a group did not give us enough time to comfortably develop.
From the outset, the team has worked towards creating a game that has a deep mapping to the chosen serious game concept, women in engineering. Initially, the team found it challenging to tackle the issue of women in engineering in a way that was engaging and educational, without being overtly offensive or including harmful stereotypes. After much deliberation, a variety of features that would ultimately lead to a deep mapping were decided upon. Many of these features required complex and intricate code. After assessing the amount of time available before the prototype was to be handed in, the team decided to revise the scope of the basic prototype, with a focus on producing a complete and extensible version of the final game that would provide a platform for feedback. As a result of this, a number of features were omitted. Unfortunately, not including these features led to the prototype's serious concept mapping being shallower than was originally expected. Given another opportunity and a longer time frame, the team would have included more serious game concept features in the basic prototype to demonstrate the game's overall purpose more effectively. All features that were omitted from the prototype are expected to be implemented for the final hand in.
We have found developing our game’s diversity topic of women in software engineering to be enlightening and engaging. The process of researching and idea generation has given us all an appreciation for the importance of diversity and presence of things like unconscious bias and institutional barriers to females being encouraged to enter into STEM fields. As future professional software engineers we recognise the importance of understanding and engaging with such a topic as it will involve and affect us as eventual industry peers.
