12.2. Blockchain and Cryptocurrency with JavaScript

Blockchain technology has revolutionized various industries, including finance, supply chain, and healthcare, by enabling transparent and secure transactions. JavaScript, as a versatile and widely-used programming language, is being utilized in the development of blockchain-based applications and cryptocurrencies. In this submodule, we'll delve into how JavaScript can be applied in blockchain and cryptocurrency development.

Blockchain Fundamentals:

A blockchain is a distributed and decentralized ledger that records transactions across a network of computers. Each transaction is grouped into a block, and these blocks are linked together in a chain, forming a secure and unchangeable record of all transactions. Some key blockchain concepts include:

  • Decentralization: Blockchains are maintained by a network of nodes (computers) rather than a central authority.

  • Consensus: Transactions are validated and added to the blockchain through a consensus mechanism, such as Proof of Work (PoW) or Proof of Stake (PoS).

  • Smart Contracts: Self-executing contracts with the terms of the agreement directly written into code.

  • Cryptocurrency: Digital or virtual currencies that utilize cryptography for security.

Using JavaScript in Blockchain and Cryptocurrency:

JavaScript can be used in various aspects of blockchain and cryptocurrency development:

  1. Smart Contracts: JavaScript is used in the creation of smart contracts on platforms like Ethereum. Smart contracts define the rules and conditions of a transaction and are executed automatically when those conditions are met.

    Example of a simple Ethereum smart contract written in Solidity (a language for writing smart contracts that is influenced by JavaScript):
