Ferrous Systems and Espressif's Rust Training on ESP32

Ferrous System Training Devcontainer

• Wokwi simulation is working with training examples!
  • Only with Vscode for the moment, it does not work with Gitpod codespaces yet.
  • For mqtt examples, I am currently using HiveMQ, since it is very simple to set up, but any suggestion is appreciated!
• Add devcontainer std-training#48 keeps getting bigger and bigger but is getting reviewed and polished.

esp-idf-sys

• pio & espidf - option to re-use a user-activated environment embuild#29 and #41, #36 esp-idf-sys#42
  • Allows for using a user-specified esp-idf repo (via $IDF_PATH) and for picking up an activated esp-idf environment (when $ESP_IDF_TOOLS_INSTALL_DIR is set to fromenv).
  • Added embuild::espidf::EspIdfVersion that is parsed from esp-idf/tools/cmake/version.cmake and used by the build script to determine tools to install and pach-set for the repo per version.
  • Original implementation by @ivmarkov where I've added some features and refactored it (sorry for overwriting your commits).
  • Feature is close to finished now (for the native installer); still needs some more testing (especially other than for Windows) though.

• esp-idf-svc

  • Option to post to an EspEventLoop queue directly from an ISR
  • Option to process EspTimer events directly from the ISR
  • New module: EspNotify - a type-safe way to use the lightweight FreeRTOS task notifications from Rust (similarly to EspEventLoop supports direct post from an ISR).

• Async / RUWM

  • Instantiation code rewritten to use the async executor's task spawning capabilities (everything used to be assembled as one big future / task before that)
  • The executor from the (standard) futures crate tested to work on the ESP-IDF (in addition to smol's async-executor / async-task)
  • In progress: custom executor for ESP-IDF where tasks can be awoken directly from an ISR (based on a custom queue + async-task). no_std and should work for bare metal too, as long as there is an allocator

• Final (known) FS issue solved: Can't read files using fs::read and fs::read_to_string #96 🎉
• LLVM 14 upgrade is incoming, with a subsequent 1.60.0.1 release coming soon after
  • Fixes the long-standing LLVM spill error issue (LLVM ERROR: Error while trying to spill A9 from class AR #87) 🎉
  • Loop optimization pass bug causing compilation errors

esp-idf-*

• Template is now defaulting to v4.4

Question

• A place for non e-h hardware traits?
  • E.g LEDC, we ideally want an abstraction trait for this, that both idf hal and bare metal hal can implement
  • Put in embedded-svc? Or new crate?
