image management 3.4 spec create image and bundle instance
This aspect of image management has the objective of simplifying the creation of registered images from instances which are already running in Eucalyptus. Currently, BundleInstance only supports instances running from images which have the windows platform. CreateImage, while present as an operation endpoint, is not currently supported.
In 3.4 these two operations are to become the standard way of taking an already running instance and turning it into a registered image. This goes beyond their scope as defined in AWS. That is, CreateImage/BundleInstance are to work also for linux images (not just windows).
Currently implemented only as the operation endpoint. Needs to:- Do usual request validation (IAM, check instance id is valid and allowed)
- Terminates the instance if the NoReboot parameter is set to false
- Create a snapshot of the root volume for the running instance referenced by InstanceId
- Register a new image using:
- The created snapshot
- The user provided Name, Description, and BlockDeviceMappings
- Include as BlockDeviceMappings any volumes which were attached to the instance at the time it was snapshotted
- Remove precondition that checks the platform
- Be tested with linux instance-store instances
- Perform BundleInstance on the root volume of the ebs instance
Optionally, as time allows, we would extend CreateImage to also operate on instance-store instances which would create a registered image which is backed by a snapshot. It would:
- Perform the steps of BundleInstance up to the point where a bundle is in an S3 bucket
- Invoke the newly added ImportVolume operation from the Import/Export service to import the bundle from the S3 bucket.
