KSQL Troubleshooting - Hands On guide

Robin Moffatt, <robin@confluent.io> v1.00, September 20, 2018

Introduction

This code accompanies the article, KSQL Troubleshooting.

Launching the environment

To spin up the environment, follow these steps:

  1. Make sure you have git, Docker, and Docker Compose installed

    • if you’re on Mac/Windows have allocated Docker at least 8GB of memory. Confirm this with:

      docker system info | grep Memory
    • I’ve not tested this with Docker on Windows. PRs welcome for any issues!

  2. Clone the repository and bring up the set of containers:

    git clone https://github.com/confluentinc/demo-scene.git
    cd demo-scene/ksql-troubleshooting
    docker-compose up -d
  3. Check everything’s running, with docker-compose ps

    $ docker-compose ps
                     Name                               Command               State                        Ports
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    ksql-troubleshooting_control-center_1    /etc/confluent/docker/run        Up      0.0.0.0:9021->9021/tcp
    ksql-troubleshooting_datagen-ratings_1   bash -c echo Waiting for K ...   Up
    ksql-troubleshooting_grafana_1           /run.sh                          Up      0.0.0.0:3000->3000/tcp
    ksql-troubleshooting_influxdb_1          /entrypoint.sh influxd           Up      8083/tcp, 0.0.0.0:8086->8086/tcp
    ksql-troubleshooting_jmxtrans_1          /docker-entrypoint.sh star ...   Up      9999/tcp
    ksql-troubleshooting_kafka_1             /etc/confluent/docker/run        Up      0.0.0.0:30001->30001/tcp, 0.0.0.0:9092->9092/tcp
    ksql-troubleshooting_ksql-server_1       /etc/confluent/docker/run        Up      0.0.0.0:30002->30002/tcp, 0.0.0.0:8088->8088/tcp
    ksql-troubleshooting_schema-registry_1   /etc/confluent/docker/run        Up      8081/tcp
    ksql-troubleshooting_zookeeper_1         /etc/confluent/docker/run        Up      2181/tcp, 2888/tcp, 3888/tcp
  4. Fire up the KSQL CLI:

    docker run --network ksql-troubleshooting_default \
               --interactive --tty --rm               \
          confluentinc/cp-ksql-cli:latest             \
          http://ksql-server:8088

Other tips

To dig around a container, you can:

  • View the logs

    docker-compose logs -f <container>
  • Get a shell prompt within the container itself, which can be useful for examining running processes

    • Tip: if ps isn’t available you can use the /proc/ virtual filesystem to explore a process' details

      docker-compose exec <ksql-server> bash

      e.g.

      # From the host machine
      $ docker-compose exec ksql-server bash

      # Now you're in the container itself
      root@ce613ce43899:/# cat /proc/1/environ
