Intermittent 401s on authentication using valid credentials

I'm using AntennaPod on Android and attempting to set up synchronisation with gpodder.net, but for a while I was seemingly getting 401s against the auth/username/login.json API endpoint (based on the error message I'm seeing in the app, which follows from their login call and error handling).

Initially I raised AntennaPod/AntennaPod#5457, but after coming back the next day I did manage to authenticate (with the same credentials), and now it's failing to sync because of 401s again, which suggests a possible issue on the server end?
