Second Floor Smash v0.2.4-alpha
It's been a while, but here's the long-awaited brand new release of Second Floor Smash!
Second Floor Smash v0.2.3-alpha
This release brings several new features and updates:
- Some character names have been updated
- A new character selection screen has been added for Baby Banjo Studios
- Polly Athlon (from Polyathlon) has been added to the game
- A new stage based on the smash hit Robo Farm Roundup has been added
Thank you to Matt Vorsteg for creating the new character select screen, adding Polly Athlon as a character, and creating the Robo Farm Roundup stage!
Second Floor Smash v0.2.2-alpha
This release has the addition of another stage created by Matt Vorsteg: Omer Island! Based on the lost game of the same name, players will have to take care to avoid the Omers while battling each other on an island.
Functionality has been added for switching quality settings so that the game runs more easily on less powerful machines. You can press "Q" on the keyboard to cycle through the different quality levels.
Second Floor Smash v0.2.1-alpha
The updates in this release of Second Floor Smash mostly concern the Hub scene (the Prince Frederick Hall second floor recreation). NPCs have been added, although they are unfinished. When the scene is loaded, one of each character will appear somewhere within the scene. By pressing either "Select" on a gamepad or the "G" key on a keyboard, you can instantiate all skins of every character in the scene at once for utter chaos. Press the button again to remove everything, and again to once again have one of each character. The NPCs will eventually have more complex spawning and despawning rules and behavior.
There are also other miscellaneous changes and additions including doors that now stay open when you open them, a few additional character audios, and new looks for John Ball showcasing his recent haircut.
Below is a Windows build and a Mac build. Please note that if you are using a Mac, you will first have to follow the procedure here in order to run the application after unzipping the folder because this build was created on a Windows computer.
Second Floor Smash v0.2-alpha
This release of Second Floor Smash has three major additions:
-
Introduction of character sound effects. 417 of them, to be precise, each one assigned to a specific character's specific moves. There are also character-specific sound effects that play when a character is selected. Unfortunately, not all characters have the same quantity or quality of sound effects, and a few sadly lack them altogether. This took a very long time.
-
A third stage has been added! In addition to the barren "Proving Ground" stage and the Tim's Tastings stage, Matt Vorsteg has created an exciting new stage based on the classic T.M.M. song, "Timmy Stroika Noika". Beware of the tanks!
-
There are now taunts. Try using the D-pad.
A few other miscellaneous improvements have been made, and a few more whiteboard images have been added in the hallway.
Second Floor Smash v0.1.2-alpha
Added additional skins for Matt Vorsteg, Jesse Parreira, and Testudo.
As a temporary fix to the InputSystem bug (in which pressing up on the left joystick and button north simultaneously during a match would disable a player's ability to jump), button north has been removed as a jump button. You now can only jump using the left joystick.
Added "Timmy Stroika Noika" by T.M.M. as music for the end scene. This may be temporary.
Made some performance optimizations in the Prince Frederick recreation.
Second Floor Smash v0.1.1-alpha
New in this release:
- Combat speed is now independent of frame rate
Second Floor Smash v0.1-alpha
This initial release of Second Floor Smash is complete with an opening sequence, an open "hub" world taking the form of the second floor of Prince Frederick Hall at University of Maryland, 49 playable characters, and two stages. Up to four players can take part in a battle. Gamepads are used for input (ex. USB-connected Logitech or X-Box controllers, Bluetooth-connected Switch Pro controllers, etc.), although if you lack a gamepad and you just want to explore Prince Frederick, you can do that with WASD, the arrow keys, and the space bar on a keyboard (this is recommended only as a last resort though, and you will not be able to do battle with a keyboard).
Currently, we are lacking special moves for the characters, the character animations are nearly all identical, there are few sound effects, there's only one real stage, and the Prince Frederick recreation could definitely be more detailed. If you would like to contribute to this project, see the README for information on how to do that.
The important thing with this release is that the project is finally at the point where you can sit down with some friends and have a somewhat enjoyable time experiencing everything the game currently has to offer.
SecondFloorSmash-Windows.zip is a 32-bit Windows build of the game, and SecondFloorSmash-Max.zip is an OS X build. Please note that if you have antivirus software, the antivirus software might remove some of the game's files causing the game not to run correctly because it doesn't recognize the publisher. You may want to extract the contents to a folder marked to be avoided by your antivirus software's security scans. This is a fun Unity game, not a virus.
