Interested in giving a Lightning Talk for H4L? Here's all you have to do!

  1. Figure out what you want to talk about
We recommend that you talk about something interesting that you have worked on with your project, but you can talk about anything related to the tech industry.
  2. Prepare your talk
Make sure that your talk is less than 5 minutes long. The sweet spot is around 4 minutes - that way you aren't feeling rushed during your talk. Don't worry about it being perfect! Lightning talks are a great way to improve your presentation skills.
  3. Sign up on the Google Form
The Google Form is pinned in the Engineering channel on the slack. To ensure quick transitions, we can not allow screen sharing. Instead, any material you want to present must be given to the Engineering CoP Leads ahead of time. We will allow remote control access over zoom when it is your turn to present. We have some tricks below for common presentation methods. Having your talk recorded is recommended but optional. If you prefer to not be recorded, don't worry! Just make sure to not check that box in the signup. If anything changes, feel free to contact a lead and we will adjust accordingly.
  4. Show up and Present :)
We will confirm your availability the Monday before your presentation. Please make sure to respond to us by Wednesday at 8:00 AM PT. We will give you a heads up before it is your turn to go. If you are the first person presenting that day, we will let you know at least 2 hours before the meeting starts. If you are only available to talk during a specific time of our meeting, please make sure to let a lead know ahead of time.

Need a slideshow?

We recommend using Remote for Slides (https://limhenry.xyz/slides/). If you choose to use this, we will give you the code before you present. This allows you to not worry about Zoom remote control latency and allows you to read any speaker notes you may have written. You do not have to download anything to use it, just go to https://slides.limhenry.xyz/ during your presentation.

Want to show off some coding?

VSCode has a sharing feature that allows you to share your code with another computer. Using that, you can code on your computer without having to screen share! Alternatively, look into Replit. Many basic coding exercises can be replicated there, allowing you to show off your knowledge with just the zoom remote control.

None of the above work?

Message an Engineering CoP Lead beforehand and we will work something out with you. Please give us at least a week's heads up.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out to an Engineering CoP leader on Slack!

Tips

  • If you are using a slideshow, keep it under 5 slides! Ideally you only spend a minute per slide.
  • Run through your talk and time yourself. It is very easy to misjudge how long you are talking for.
  • Be sure to speak clearly - it's also easy to subconsciously speed up while presenting.
  • Make sure your webcam and mic are working before joining the Zoom call.
  • Above all, have fun - you should be talking about something interesting to you!
