Concerned Joe is an upcoming platformmer also written in LOVE. I was talking to the developer while he played the game for the first time. Here were some of his suggestions:

I don't like it that down+jump doesn't let you fall through platforms

And I think enter should be the universal "ok"
and esc should be the universal "back" or "pause"
on top of what the user sets in the control menu

it's also weird how moving and then ducking doesn't crawl

also I'd increase the player's acceleration
it feels heavy

As always, these are just suggestions. What do you think?

Agree with all the points except for the first one and the last one.
The double tap down just doesn't suit his preference, there's nothing wrong with it being as it is currently.
I also think the acceleration is fine, the guy should play Cave Story if he thinks Hawkthorne is slow.

That being said, all other points I agree with and that Concerned Joe game looks pretty cool, I want to check that out.

I agree that adding down+jump as an alternate means of dropping through platforms would be a good change. We're not using that key combination for anything else, and it is quite common among other platformers as well.

I've got the day off tomorrow, so I'll see if I can get that implemented.

Moving+ducking already makes the player slide (if the cheat's enabled).

I definitely like the idea of a universal select/back though.

It was certainly confusing at first using the space bar for okay, but after playing a bit i realized spacebar so much better than if you would use enter. Then on the other hand, would it hurt if you make both enter and spacebar a button for OK?

@Marthyn It likely wouldn't be to hard but it would take some time, which may not be worth it for such a small issue at this point in time.

@niamu New pair of eyes on any of these suggestions?

We have JUMP as the selection button for everything except the cheat menu where it's ATTACK which has always bugged me. I have noticed a lot of people getting stuck on the opening menu, trying to press 'enter' to select items on the menu rather than space. I know we have instructions up but they still get confused.

I definitely think that we should have the selection keys be SPACE as well as ENTER. Once that change is done and #2149 we can close this.
