test fail is unrelated (in the may-fail network stuff) but I'm marking this as blocked because I'm avoiding making changes to our pre-commit environment until after hacktoberfest is done.

Rebasing this just to force the tests to run again in case any of the recent merges aren't compatible with this version of black. We've been seeing some weird behaviour in people's local envs vs ci.
