the domain has expired status in the statuses_history - why its there or how did it get there is not known at this point

When FD was removed from the domain system restored expired status to the domain even though the domain was not expired and was not expired when the FD was set in the first place.

Expired status should be dynamic - there is no need to save it to the statuses history as it should always check the relation of current and expired date and set it regardless of other statuses.
