Looks like it hasn't been updated in a while and it doesn't seem to like newer generation EC2 instances. Is there an alternative to this project?

I don't know of an alternative but there is a fork of this project that supports Blender 2.8: https://github.com/gwhobbs/brenda
I created my own fork from that one to upgrade to python3 and Blender 2.83.4: https://github.com/msmith93/brenda
