Controlled Vocabularies, Schema and Local Vocabulary
The metadata of the Cthulhu Mythos collection is largely shaped by Library of Congress (LC) controlled vocabularies, including LC Subject Headings and the LC Name Authority File.
Our schema employed Metadata Object Description Schema (MODS) and a local Cthulhu Mythos schema, which allows archivists and catalogers to describe objects in ways that our users understand. The scheme maps to Dublin Core in the hopes that harvesters will find our metadata useful and enriching for their users.
Dates are ascribed ISO8601 and are rendered as such: YYYY/MM/DD.
We created a local vocabulary that consists of three terms: oldOnes and cursedObjects, and Cthulhu Mythos, which allow users to ability search the Cthulhu Mythos collection with Lovecraftian vocabulary. These were used as search terms, just as LC Subject Headings are used.
