Markdown is a lightweight markup language for adding formatting to plaintext, created by John Gruber in 2004 and widely used today. Unlike WYSIWYG editors like Microsoft Word, Markdown requires the user to add syntax such as number signs or asterisks to format text. It may initially be challenging for those accustomed to visual editing tools. The Visual Studio Code editor can display Markdown files with their intended formatting.
