nelson.social (or "we") is a server run on Mastodon open-source software and operated by a team of volunteers who live in Nelson, BC:
We respect your privacy and are committed to protecting it by complying with this policy. This policy describes the processing of information provided or collected on the nelson.social online space. We follow this privacy policy in accordance with the applicable Canadian privacy legislation.
We collect, via direct interactions with you or automated technologies, several types of information from and about you, including:
- Personal account information. To create an account, we ask that you provide us with a username, a password, an email address, a display name, and a profile picture. Your profile information, which includes your display name and profile picture, is always public.
- Usage information. We collect information about your activity on nelson.social, including the content that you post, your interactions with other users and their content, and your communication with us.
- Device information. When you log in, we record the IP address you log in from, as well as other information about the logged-in sessions, such as your browser type and device.
When you use nelson.social, please note that:
- The list of people that you follow is displayed publicly; the same is true for your followers.
- Public and unlisted posts are displayed publicly. Followers-only posts are delivered to your followers and users who are mentioned in them, and direct posts are delivered only to users mentioned in them. This means that your posts may be delivered to different servers and copies are stored there.
- When you delete posts, your followers will be notified about the deletion. The action of reblogging or favouriting another post is public.
- Do not share any sensitive information in the nelson.social online space.
We use information that we collect about you or that you provide to us, including any personal information:
- to present the nelson.social online space and its contents to you;
- to fulfill the purposes for which you provided the information or that were described when it was collected, or any other purpose for which you provide it;
- to provide you with notices about your nelson.social account;
- to carry out our obligations and enforce our rights arising from any contracts or interactions with you;
- to notify you about changes to the nelson.social online space or any services we offer or provide though it;
- to improve the nelson.social online space products or services, or user relationships and experiences;
- in any other way we may describe when you provide the information; or
- for any other purpose with your consent.
We will not share your personal information with a third party except in limited circumstances, including:
- when you give us consent to share your personal information with a third party;
- when you direct us to share your personal information with a third party to fulfill the purpose disclosed by us when you provide the information; and
- when we share your personal information with a third party to ensure the safety and security of third parties, to protect our rights and property and the rights and property of third parties, to comply with legal process, or in other cases if we believe in good faith that disclosure is required by law.
Please note that once we share your personal information with a third party, the information received by such third party is controlled by that third party and becomes subject to the third party’s privacy practices.
We may transfer personal information that we collect or that you provide as described in this policy to contractors, service providers, and other third parties we use to support the nelson.social online space (such as analytics and search engine providers that assist us with site improvement and optimization) and who are contractually obligated to keep personal information confidential, use it only for the purposes for which we disclose it to them, and to process the personal information with the same standards set out in this policy.
We strive to provide you with choices regarding the personal information you provide to us. We provide you the ability to exercise certain controls and choices regarding our collection, use and sharing of your information. In accordance with applicable law, your controls and choices may include:
- correcting, updating, and deleting your nelson.social account;
- choosing to set your browser to refuse all or some browser cookies, or to alert you when cookies are being sent; and
- requesting access to the personal information we hold about you and that we amend or delete it.
The security of your personal information is very important to us. We use physical, electronic, and administrative measures designed to secure your personal information from accidental loss and from unauthorized access, use, alteration, and disclosure.
The safety and security of your information also depends on you. For example, with respect to your nelson.social account, you are responsible for keeping your account name and password confidential. We ask you not to share your password with anyone.
Unfortunately, the transmission of information via the Internet is not completely secure. Although we do our best to protect your personal information, we cannot guarantee the security of your personal information transmitted to the nelson.social online space. Any transmission of personal information is at your own risk. We are not responsible for circumvention of any privacy settings or security measures contained on the nelson.social online space.
Except as otherwise permitted or required by applicable law or regulation, we will only retain your personal information for as long as necessary to fulfill the purposes we collected it for , including for the purposes of satisfying any legal, accounting, or reporting requirements. Under some circumstances we may anonymize your personal information so that it can no longer be associated with you. We reserve the right to use such anonymous and de-identified data for any legitimate business purpose without further notice to you or your consent.
It is important that the personal information we hold about you is accurate and current. Please keep us informed if your personal information changes. By law, you have the right to request access to and to correct the personal information that we hold about you.
We may request specific information from you to help us confirm your identity and your right to access, and to provide you with the personal information that we hold about you or make your requested changes. Applicable law may allow or require us to refuse to provide you with access to some or all of the personal information that we hold about you, or we may have destroyed, erased, or made your personal information anonymous in accordance with our record retention obligations and practices. If we cannot provide you with access to your personal information, we will inform you of the reasons why, subject to any legal or regulatory restrictions.
