Tranquillus Andronicus.</opener>
<note>(19. Octobris 1569; ed. Wenzel 10, 1, pp. 3--11)</note>
<p>Non possum oblivisci tuae benevolentiae quam saepe perspexi erga me singularem,
sed tunc evidentius sese exeruit quum Viennae proxima aestate legens quoddam
libertate irritaveris, adulationibus conciliantur, silentio praetermittere
tutissimum est. Quamquam summa tua quidem auctoritas et candor animi tui
vehementer me permoveat ac sane vehementius ceteris omnibus; interim tamen abs
te peto concedas hoc mihi nec moleste feras; dum tibi probem causas a me
suscepti negotii, spero cognitis rationibus omni crimine me absolves. Legimus
bona studia sua ipsius natura sponte currenti; contra vero me genius meus ut
Deo maxime salutaria praecipienti resistam?
inferos perpetuo cruciandum. Nam in unius corporis amissione haud magna iactura
multa cogimur iniusta, impia, nefaria perficere. Quamobrem Deo conscio et
vindice, a quo turpiter defecimus, deiicimur in valles plenas lacrimarum ex
quibus evadere nunquam licet. Itaque consulto multos mortales perspecta vanitate
rerum humanarum ne indulgendo corpori aeternitate privarentur multo negligentius
vixisse. Egone igitur octogenarius iam exacto vitae spatio mortem pertimescam?
Etiamsi nulla vis inferatur, certe intra paucos dies hinc iure naturae
Hoc velim tibi persuadeas me nulli
metus, nullae praemiorum spes, ne vivendi quidem dulcedo ab instituto depellent;
in hac vocatione mihi certum est vivere et extingui.</p>
<p>Restat diluere quorundam satis ineptas criminationes. Requirunt a me cum convicio
quonam privilegio tam licenter deplorem conditionem nostri temporis, tacite
vellicando Principes immerita de causa? Ad haec subsannantes inquiunt: <q>Nisi
tu temperes a maledictis, statim respublica corruet, instar Amiclarum quae
tacendo perierunt.
</p>
<p>Nisi me teneret ratio mei honoris, nec melioribus probari vellem; istis ego
calumniatoribus, quibus omnia sordent in rebus humanis, nihil responderem. Tibi
vero imprimis homini candido et docto et sapienti cupio rationem totius
instituti mei constare. Nam si tu subscribes labori meo, tulisse omnium
suffragia putabo.</p>
<p>Haud equidem inficior ingenium mihi perquam tenue contigisse. Quamobrem summo
eminentissimis nostri aevi familiariter conversatus sum. Postea immiscui me
nominatim evocatum in aulis Regum; an hinc forte aliquid adiumenti mihi
<p>Porro in his, quantum licuit per meam tenuitatem humanitus instructus, veritatem,
pertinacia improborum, tamen in vinea Domini exercuisse me non pigebit. Nam boni
alios beet, alios fulminet. Ipse dominus temporum et nostrarum cogitationum
scrutator intimus omnia novit momenta quibus cuique mercedem suam, ut quisque
meritus est, abunde opportuneque referat. Siquidem rerum ac temporum eventus in
sua servat potestate; mortales omnino latere voluit, ne Apostolis quidem, quos
tantopere <pb n="7"/> dilexit, patefecit quando restituet Regnum Israel.</p>
<p>Proinde nostri muneris est nostrum pensum fideliter persolvere. Successus in manu
Paulo Apostolo praedicante iacta sunt mediocria quaedam fidei fundamenta;
aliquot postea saeculis ipsa fides Christiana per orbem dilatata crevit in
immensum.
in tantis aerumnis exagitatus intermisit. Eadem animi magnitudine antiqui
sanctis praedicationibus, postquam invidia decessit, omnis aetas uberes fructus
legit.
auctoritatem <pb n="8"/> detrahere moliuntur, somniantes auctoritatem contineri
dignitate personarum, nec sapientiam habitare in pannoso amictu tenuibusque
fortunis, verum in splendidis titulis et in his qui longo famulitio stipantur.
Qua re nihil absurdius fingi potuit. Quippe sapientia, quae domicilium in optima
constitutione animi habet, non facile ingreditur in divites domos, tot
illecebris vallatas; alioqui si quandoque irrupisset, turpiter eiiceretur, ut a
dissimillimis.
venerantur.</p>
<p>Quamvis multo rarius nostra tempestate huiusmodi sanctitatis exempla propter
incredulitatem hominum elucescant, tamen Deus benedictus prospiciens humano
generi non vult suam Ecclesiam his luminibus orbatam esse nec penitus aberrare a
vero summergique naviculam Petri.
a mundo cognoscitur.
sacerdotum principis nihil tam nefarium, tam immane conferri potest. Ipse
invictum adversus pecuniam subegit. Huius, inquam, orationi spiritum Dei
</p>
desiderio nostae salutis acerbius in scelera invecti sunt. Quippe nec iidem ipsi
nec quisquam mortalium expers omnis culpae fuit; solus Dominus Christus peccatum
non fecit. Et sane peccare privatos homines a paucis <sic>advertitur</sic>
rerum humanarum contigit, quum conspicui sint oculis omnium, nihil potest in iis
respublica omnis in interitum ruit?</p>
republica proscindere maledictis et vocare in invidiam. Tu quoque tales
veterum excuti.
<corr>atrociter</corr> imminente nostris cervicibus quisquam Principum

secura gaudeat pace sempiterna.
