<salute>Reverendissime et observandissime Domine salutem.</salute>
</opener>
singulari Dei dono mihi contigit, mihi inquam, post tot labores exhaustos
salus in universam rempublicam. Nemo quidem inficiatur inculpatae eorum vitae,
quos sine querela vixisse constat, repromitti regnum Dei.
nominis quidem relicta, quasi nunquam in rerum natura fuissent. Et sane,
illustrium virorum cunctis aetatibus magna paucitas extitit; alioqui posteritas
litterarum mandasset monumentis. In nostra vero tempora, siquidem fere omnia
labuntur in deterius, ista infelicitas latius dimanavit. Vix reperias quemquam
expulsa nostras sedes reliquit.
irrumpendi in domos illustrium. Quamobrem tota respublica mirum in modum
existimet nos in has temporum angustias incidisse ant fatorum serie, aut
conversione syderum, aut coelorum influxu. Nostra certe culpa, nostra
infidelitate pertrahimur in mala omnia; et nisi rationes vivendi commutemus in
melius, vereor, ne tam pertinaciter Deo repugnantes et obduratos in nequitia,
una ruina simul omnes involvat. Nam improbitatis vectigal est calamitas et
exitium.
pene deploratis, virtute, sapientia, magnitudine animi, lucem in diuturnis
in omnes partes orbis Christiani, magno repente miraculo in summam pietatem
conversam, exemplum ceteris omnibus caste sancteque vivendi dedisse.
subtraham, neque vereor apud te in suspitionem adulationis incurrere, a quo
crimine cum natura mea, tam omnis anteacta vita perpetuo me defendit. Satis
Propterea in dignationem Principum venisti, a quibus praecipuis es ornamentis
eos appetiisses, nemo tibi vitio verteret, laudi potius ascriberent omnes.
Ceterum in hac praeclara tuae virtutis
proximus Diis immortalibus, quem minima labes imprudentem aspersit. Quocirca
neque te huiusmodi peccandi minutiis prorsus libero, licet in horchestra laudis
constitisse videaris.
animadvertimus, iam ostendam. Imposuit tibi fortuna, vel potius Deus, magni
personam antistitis; quae sane <pb n="45"/> dignitas tantum antecellit regum
infulas, quantum praestant anima corpori, coelum terrae, humana Divinis <note resp="#editor">
<foreign xml:lang="hu">(igy)</foreign>
</note>, et aeterna fluxis.
Proinde quum tantam
molem sustineas administer orbis terrarum principis: adnitendum tibi magnis
consultor in praedicando evangelio. Hoc documentum sit cuilibet gerenti munus
publicum, praesertim ecclesiasticum; ne quis nimium confidens viribus ingenii
sui, abiiciat aliena consilia, seque idcirco multis malis involvat. Nemo sapit
subvertantur.
prae oculis habendnm. Tradunt Regem Pyrrhum, civilibus et imperatoriis artibus
nulli regum illustrium inferiorem, palam confessum: se plures urbes eloquentia
Cyneae amici et comitis, quam armis cepisse. In hac imitatione velim acquiescas;
ubicunque fama vulgavit viros sapientia institutoque vivendi celebres, quibuscum
litteris exercitatum, multaque experientia praestantem.
mansuetudine tua solita complectere.
<p>Assiduis nunciis fama percrebuit, Thurcum instruere classem multo maximam, cui
adiecit centum <pb n="47"/> pontones ad traiiciendos equos mirae magnitudinis.
tam gravis tempestas in suam perniciem evolvatur.
contigua litoribus Asiae, propterea magnis viribus conantur huic occurrere. Alii
existimant, Thurcum alias provincias tanto apparatu invasurum esse. Quorundam
Betica a Rege Hispaniae defecerunt. Nam Thurcus revera unum Regem Philippum,
