Subject: Participant 2

Attempt to duplicate parts of Graphic Rendering lecture note into sashimi-note. This note contains

  • Basic paragragh, list and headings
  • Math symbol
  • Images

Software environment

  • Windows 10 Chrome | 15 inches laptop

Action Performed

  • Duplication of document into sashimi note
    • involve typing general markdown syntax, table, math
  • Renaming of file and folder
  • Scan throught all the instructions in the feature list
  • Carefully read the mathematical instruction in the feature list.

Difficulty faced by the participant

  • While moving along the viewer or editor side, the view is not synchronised with each other.
  • Participant struggled to match the content between and left and right side of the screen.
  • Participant saw that he could type ASCII math from the description within the feature section. He also wanted to use it. However, he never read pass the KATEX part. It took the particant a while (5 mins) to realise that there is another section for ASCII math below the KATEX part.
  • Participant made a typo on the ASCII math opening syntax ``` math. The code block is displayed instead. He is able to recognise that there is a failure in the math rendering. However he do not know the cause and started to suspect that it could be caused by him typing the wrong math syntax. It took the participant quite some times (> 5 mins) to notice the typo in ``` math
  • Participant is constantly switching tab bewteen the feature list and the Content pagge. It is until much later that he decided to copy and paste codes from the feature list to his document and modify it from there.
  • Participant struggled to print the document as he could not find the button on the screen. He then attempted to press the print command on the browser. However, the browser produced the wrong print format to him (which he is able to recognise that as "something gone wrong") The participant attempted to print / save the document from the File Manager UI. However none of the appraoch work. Participant never get to export the document into a PDF format without guidance from the experimenter.
  • User do not know how to rename a folder. User first instinct is to right click on the file to rename. However it doesn't help. The access rename feature was only discovered when he later try to click on the name field.

Participant unmet expectation

  • Participant was trying to create a new file. He focused on the create file button when he is pressing it. After pressing the button, he paused for about 2 seconds waiting for something to happen.
    • althougth a file has already been created (with a subtle pop in animation), he didn't notice the changes in the screen.
    • Participant was expecting some form of feedback from the button instead.
  • Participant tried to right click on the file / folder in the File Manager. They were expecting a context menu related to the file/folder to show. However, the saw the native browser context menu instead.

Observation

  • Participant tried to open the file with a single click from the File Manager. The file did not open but got selected instead. He quickly realise that it uses double click for file opening. The entire process took ~ less than a second.
  • Participant was very happy when he could finally get the ASCII Math to work.
  • Participant did not have problem importing picture into the document. He understood that, the markdown syntax require an image URL.
