While the original plan had simple off-the-shelf stepper axes from snapmaker, I was also thinking about better stages that could be produced. I spent some time thinking about options and came to the conclusion that a good stage should have at least:
At the time I figured that linear shaft motors (radially arranged magnets) would be easiest to fabricate, but they do seem to take up more space, which may in the end be a bit of a limitation.
These two elements were then combined in a concept design that can be accessed at openMLA/linear-shaft-motor
Tip
It would be even better to have air bearings instead of the crossed roller units, but that is an even greater challenge and not realistic.
Note
For now the development of this stage will be on the backburner as the optics take priority
