The protocol definition was expanded to accommodate alternative transports such as IPMI and DBus (OpenBMC implements the IPMI interface using DBus). With this in mind, make the mbox interface optional. Related, @shenki will be dropping support for the ASPEED mailbox driver when he bumps openbmc/linux to 5.1; the mailbox driver is not upstream and the OpenPOWER platforms will no-longer be using it.
