How specific should an extension be?

I'm really inspired by this extension proposal from @vasgat : #23

And it brings up an interesting question to me around how specific extensions should be -- if we were to look at workforce indicators, they could arguably be chunked into specific data around just gender, or age, or retention, or bundled together like this all in one extension.

Curious on thoughts around the granularity of the data attributes—could extensions be merged with each other to become mega-extensions? Is specificity and smaller extensions better, and we orient more towards linking extensions together (like legos?)
