Regolith 3.1 Beta 1 available for testing

I'm trying 3.1 on Ubuntu 23.10 and I get the following error when trying to install i3xrocks-time

I'm using Ubuntu 23.10 (mantic), however I had manually installed Regolith 3.0 on it, which I then (partially?) removed before installing Regolith 3.1 BETA, so I'm pretty sure there's some leftover bits from 3.0 that are causing unhappiness (and hence the warning that it might be a "me" thing).

I assume you'd love to hear reports of the experience of trying out the beta.

I just updated to Ubuntu mantic and Regolith 3.1 beta. Some of my findings, I'm pretty sure, are not beta related.

1. I see no trace of the reported delays in launching programs (but then I understand that 3.1 beta1 should have fixed them).

2. Out of the box after running apt-get upgrade, the configuration seems to have been something of a mess of old and new stuff. This is something I've experienced before; a more creative use of package conflicts might be useful.

3. On my work computer (crucially, nvidia GPU), the wayland version has never started out of the box; when I start it from SDDM, it just blinks and I get back to the login screen. After some investigation, the reason is this:

$ sway-regolith 
00:00:00.002 [sway/main.c:65] Proprietary Nvidia drivers are NOT supported. Use Nouveau. To launch sway anyway, launch with --unsupported-gpu and DO NOT report issues.

When I start sway-regolith --unsupported-gpu, I seem to get something that probably is fairly broken (particularly, I've never seen a mouse pointer; terminals do open with keyboard shortcuts; my globally set keymap (se -variant dvorak) is not honored, but the keymap is US). Thus, probably the requirement for --unsupported-gpu is there for a reason. As a wishlist issue, the failure should be more explanatory than just blinking.

4. So, I use the X11 version, as I've done so far. I think that the program launch delay workaround has prevented regolith-control-center from starting:

If I force it to work by esttitng XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP=GNOME, it starts but many (most? all?) of the options (like display configuration) do not work.

5. Initially, ilia didn't start for me with mod-space but did start when run from terminal. I don't know what happened, but it started to work. Logout still doesn't work. Locking the screen does not work, but starts to work if I start gnome-screensaver from a terminal.

6. Obviously it's also less than ideal (though not critical to me) that you cannot have gnome and regolith coexist on the same computer. But, yes, I understand that this is a gnome bug and a temporary workaround.

7. I don't know what's new and what's old, but my /usr/share/wayland-sessions has sessions named "sway-regolith" (Name="Regolith on Wayland") and "regolith-sway" (Name="Sway Regolith"). The first runs /usr/bin/gnome-session --builtin --session=regolith-wayland and the other just sway. If these have a difference, they probably should have different names. If not, there probably should only be one.

A few suggestions:

1. The package names are a bit hard to navigate. For example, apt-cache shows for me packages (some of these may be obsolete) named regolith-control-center, regolith-i3-control-center, regolith-i3-control-center-regolith and regolith-wm-control-center (instead of the "obviously" wayland related regolith-sway-control-center-regolith).

I think I have now understood that some of the packages just install configuration snippets. Confusingly, it's possible to install packages that cause a configuration error due to a conflict, like two packages that contain configurations for different launchers (ilia and something) or two different control centers.

• Suggestion 1: Make these packages conflicts: each other. It does not make sense to have them all installed at the same time.
• Suggestion 2: Make the naming more obvious by ensuring that all packages that contain (only) config snippets follow the same naming pattern, perhaps regolith-config-*.

Indeed turns out I had one leftover lunar link. Nevertheless, after disabling that, it's still not that clear to me which packages are current and which are stale. I did look at the packages after removing lunar; the only regolith package that is installed and is not in the repositories seems to be i3-gaps-vm, so I assume the state is somewhat.

Ok, diffing my installation with yours:

• I have regolith-control-center 1.45.5-1-1regolith-mantic instead of 1.45.4-1-1regolith-mantic
• My regolith-inputd is 0.2.2-1regolith-mantic
• I have many more regolith-look-* installed
• It seems I currently don't have regolith-desktop installed (and I do have xdg-desktop-portal-gnome installed). I'm not really seeing any delays I can think of, though. Curious. Does this package have some function besides depending on other packages and conflicting with xdg-desktop-portal-gnome?

To your last question, regolith-desktop is primarily the "meta package" which pulls everything else in (also transitively, via package Breaks/Conflicts, removes incompatible packages) but also ships the file /etc/regolith/version.

Whoops I missed it, you were right. I think if you install regolith-desktop it should help.
