The main data to be visualised on the interactive map are the functional ecosystem groups of the new global ecosystem typology. We assume the following characteristics (further refinement will be necessary after the start of the project):

  • around 100 different functional groups;
  • groups belong to different biomes that can be grouped by realms (see diagram below);
  • groups can further be categorized by vulnerability category and occurrence (major/minor);
  • multiple geospatial areas (possibly also locations) can be identified and stored for each group;
  • all data, at least for now, will be made available in vector format (the spatial resolution will likely increase in the future so that data may need to be made available as raster imagery);
  • in addition to the geospatial information, for each group there will or can be:
    • a unique alpha-numeric identifier, also encoding realm and biome;
    • a description of ecological traits, key ecological drivers and global distribution (possibly in multiple languages);
    • references;
    • a photo image and/or a video;
    • a diagram image summarising the description (possibly in multiple languages).
