Option for the block that allows access by other networks

To my understanding, there used to be a block that allowed external access of the RS network (as if it were a chest). However, it was removed due to performance issues. Is there any chance there could be an option to re-enable that? If not, could someone please explain how I might go about adding that back for my own personal use? I feel that integration with other mods would be beneficial to people who want to have more options with how their storage is set up. I've tried looking for mods that add this but none are for 1.18.2. Thanks so much to anyone who goes out of their way to address this.
