Recommendation System Project

Project Overview

This project uses the Grouplens Movielens database to create a recommendation system using collaborative filtering. I utilized the surprise library to create this system. I iterated through the various types of models and found SVD To be the most accurate model. I addressed the cold start problem with creating a function that gathers new users ratings of some of the more popular movies to be able to recommend five movies to them.

The repository contains the following:

  • Notebook about the Exploratory Data Analysis of the data provided with the movielens database as well as trying out different algorithms for models
  • Notebook containing how to get new users to supply ratings to address the cold start problem and using those inital ratings to recommend 5 movies
  • The data from movielens (ratings.csv, movies.csv, tags.csv, links.csv)
  • The subsample of data I used by filtering out users that had not rated more than 50 movies and movies that had less ratings. (ratings_limited_users.csv, popular_movies.csv)

Data Exploration Findings

I recognized there were a few movies that had a very high rating but only a few ratings. In fact, 3441 movies only had 1 rating so I limited this, but looking at users who had rated multiple movies and kept the ratings from users who had rated at least 50 movies. By doing this, I kept 98% of the original movies and 63% of the users. This increased the accuracy of collaborative filtering.

Modeling Comparison

In the end I found SVD to be the most accurate algorithm with RMSE of 0.857 and MAE of 0.658. Image of Chart with model comparisons

Issues to address

I addressed the cold start problem by giving new users a way to give their ratings to movies and then return 5 movie recommendations based on their ratings. I was able to improve this process by reducing the random list of movies that they would be asked to rate to be from the most popular movies or movies that had received the most ratings. This was to ensure that new users wouldn't be bogged down with having to go through their rating submissions filled with obscure movie titles.

Another way to address this would be to automatically recommend based on the content they show interest in (content filtering) instead of based on other customers. The best approach would include a combination of both content and collaborative filtering. Image showing collaborative vs content filtering

Business application

This can be applied to other types of cold start problems when trying to gather what a new customer might be interested in. A similar application would be to ask new customers to rate how interested they are in a random sample of the top selling products and using collaborative filtering based on other customers similar interests.
