Is it possible to use .watch in an Overlay widget?

I'm learning overlay widgets right now and can successfully get one to open with the following code:

  void show(BuildContext context) async {
    OverlayState? overlayState = Overlay.of(context);
    OverlayEntry overlayEntry = new OverlayEntry(builder: _build);

    overlayState?.insert(overlayEntry);
  }

  Widget _build(BuildContext context){
    return new Positioned(
      top: 50.0,
      left: 50.0,
      child: new Material(
        color: Colors.transparent,
        child:
        //new Icon(Icons.warning, color: Colors.purple),
        Column(children: [
          Text('hey!'),
          Text('yo!'),
          Text(ref.watch(nameProvider).name.toString())
        ],)
      ),
    );
  }
}

Now in a separate ConsumerStatefulWidget I can trigger the overlay to show itself from a GestureDetector as follows:

          ShowNotificationIcon _icon =  ShowNotificationIcon(ref:ref);

          _icon.show(context);

By passing ref to this overlay widget I am also able to get the value of my nameProvider. However, as I change the value of nameProvider the text widget in my overlay does not update.

It seems like the .watch isn't able to function properly outside of a ConsumerWidget ?

Is there any work around to this problem?

I broke out a new ConsumerWidget and just fill the data from there and its working. I'm an idiot... :)
